Devotions for this week: Jesus and the Demoniac – January 26, 2020

SHARE:   What was a high point of your day? What was a low point?

READ: Read the following daily readings to deepen your understanding

Monday, Psalm 89:1-4, Psalm

Tuesday, Matthew 8:23-33, Jesus casts out demons

Wednesday, Luke 8:31-41, Jesus casts out demons

Thursday, Luke 16:13-19, Jesus heals

Friday, Luke 9:37-47, Jesus heals a Boy

Saturday, Acts 14:4-14, Paul Heals

Go to clergystuff.com/daily-devotions for devotions on the daily readings.

TALK:  Consider some of these ideas

“And when [Jesus] stepped out of the boat, immediately a man of the tombs with an unclean spirit met him. ”  (Mark 5:2)

When with the Gerasenes, Jesus tried to help a man tormented by demons, but his efforts were met with fear and resistance.  It seems only the demons knew that Jesus was the Son of God.

  • Where do you see the influence of evil?  Do demons exist, or is just a metaphor for other problems?
  • Do you feel you’ve experienced evil?  What did you do to fight it?

PRAY:  Lord God, your power is greater than evil.  Shake us from complacent acceptance of all that doesn’t work in our world, and visit us with your healing Spirit.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.

BLESS:  May you feel the love of Christ protecting you from evil!

The seeds of new life — this week at ELC

January 17, 2020 by john

Devotions for this week: Parables in Mark – January 19, 2020

SHARE:   What was a high point of your day? What was a low point?

READ: Read the following daily readings to deepen your understanding

Monday, Psalm 126, Psalm

Tuesday, Mark 3:31-35, The True Kindred of Jesus

Wednesday, Mark 4:35-41, Jesus Stills a Storm

Thursday, Matthew 13:1-8, Parable of Sower

Friday, Matthew 13:9-12, Disciples Question Jesus

Saturday, Matthew 13:13-23, Parable of Sower Explained

Go to clergystuff.com/daily-devotions for devotions on the daily readings.

TALK:  Consider some of these ideas

“He began to teach them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them: “Listen! A sower went out to sow.”  (Mark 4:2-3)

Jesu taught by parables so that some would understand, while other were kept from knowing the word.  For now, Jesus would invest in those ready to follow.

  • What does it take for seeds to grow?  How much do they depend on humans, and how much is by design alone?
  • Sometimes we can’t completely change a situation—we can only plant a seed.  When was the last time you felt you planted a seed?

PRAY:  O Lord, your word is indeed life to us.  May we receive it with joy, and lay aside the concerns of our lives, caring only for the abundant life in your service.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.

BLESS:  May the God of growth help you find good soil!

Jesus’ Ministry/Our Ministry — This week at ELC

January 10, 2020 by john

When Jesus began his ministry, he started by gathering followers and then by healing and teaching. The first priority for him was to tend to the people.  We are called to continue that ministry.

WORSHIP SCHEDULE

SATURDAY EVENING WORSHIP

5 p.m.
Modified Traditional Worship
A modified traditional worship service; generally less than 45 minutes.
We gather in the chapel on the Front Street side of the building near Fourth Street

Devotions for this week: Jesus Heals and Teaches – January 12, 2020

SHARE:   What was a high point of your day? What was a low point?

READ: Read the following daily readings to deepen your understanding

Monday, Psalm 103:6-14, Psalm

Tuesday, Mark 2:23-28, Pronouncement about the Sabbath Wednesday, Mark 3:1-6, The Man with a Withered Hand

Thursday, Mark 3:7-12, A Multitude at the Seaside

Friday, Mark 3:13-19a, Jesus Appoints the Twelve

Saturday, Mark 3:19b-30, Jesus and Beelzebul

Go to clergystuff.com/daily-devotions for devotions on the daily readings.

TALK:  Consider some of these ideas

“When he returned to Capernaum after some days …So many gathered that there was no longer room for them, not even in front of the door; and he was speaking the word to them “(Mark 2:1-2)

Jesus’ ministry was in full swing.  He was beginning to do and to say things that shocked and challenged.  Healing, offering forgiveness, eating with tax collectors on the Sabbath – all things which shook the way things had always been.

  • What was the last controversy that shook your community?  How did people handle it?
  • Are you willing to push back when you see something that is wrong?  Even if you might upset people?

PRAY:  O God, your words are sometimes difficult to hear.  Turn our hearts toward you, so that when we are challenged, we can rely on your Spirit for strength and guidance.  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

BLESS:  May you feel the guidance of Christ, even in uncertain times!

“The beginning of the Good News” — This week at ELC

January 3, 2020 by john

As Mark’s gospel begins, Jesus’ baptism is marked by the Spirit’s presence, and he is sent out to begin this ministry. We have that same Spirit’s presence, and we are sent out as well.

Worship this week with Holy Communion:

SATURDAYS, 5 P.M. A modified, shortened traditional worship service, in the chapel on the Front Street side of the building.

SUNDAYS, 8:30 A.M. Traditional worship in the sanctuary, accompanied by the pipe organ and the ELC Senior Choir.

SUNDAY, 9:30 A.M. Sunday School for ages 3 through 8th grade, adult study and fellowship.

SUNDAYS, 10:30 A.M. Contemporary worship with Christian music by our ELC Praise Team.

Devotions for this week: Jesus’ Baptism, Beginning of the Good News – January 5, 2020

SHARE:   What was a high point of your day? What was a low point?

READ: Read the following daily readings to deepen your understanding

Monday, Psalm 91:9-12, Psalm

Tuesday, Malachi 3:1-7, The Coming Messenger

Wednesday, Isaiah 40:1-11, Comfort, Comfort

Thursday, Isaiah 44:1-8, God’s Blessing

Friday, Joel 2:28-29, God’s Spirit Poured Out

Saturday, Isaiah 42:1-9, The Servant, a Light to the Nations

Go to clergystuff.com/daily-devotions for devotions on the daily readings.

TALK:  Consider some of these ideas

“I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”  (Mark 1:8)

Jesus’ ministry began with the voice of a prophet and meaningful baptism. Then he was driven out into the world, where he gathered his community.

  • Has the world ever confused a prophet for an actual leader?  How does that impact the group and the message?
  • What do you know of the story of your baptism?  Who was there?  What promises were made?  If you have children, what have you told them about their baptism?

PRAY:  O God, you poured out your Spirt upon your only Son, showing the people that he belonged to you.  Remind us that you have claimed us as your children in the waters of baptism.    In Jesus’ name.  Amen.

BLESS:  You are filled with the Holy Spirit and loved forever.  Amen.

A worship of Lessons and Carols — This week at ELC

December 27, 2019 by john

We continue the celebration of Christ’s birth with a special worship of Lessons and Carols this Sunday. There will be one combine worship at 10:00 a.m., with no Sunday School, or Saturday worship this week.

Devotions for this week: Jesus’ Ministry Begun – December 29, 2019

SHARE: What was a high point of your day? What was a low point?

READ: Read the following daily readings to deepen your understanding

        Monday, Psalm 103:1-5, Psalm

Tuesday, Isaiah 42:10-20, A Hymn of Praise

        Wednesday, Psalm 2, Psalm

        Thursday, Psalm 113, Psalm

        Friday, Psalm 146:5-10, Psalm

        Saturday, Psalm 108:1-4, Psalm

(Go to clergystuff.com/daily-devotions for devotions on the daily readings.)

TALK: In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed.   (Mark 1:35)

Jesus’ ministry was fast and full.  In the middle of his whirlwind tour, he took time to pray – to recharge and spend time with God.

  • With all the technology, there is a lot of discussion about how it impacts people’s brains.  Is our technology a good thing?  How might it cause harm?
  • How do cope when you are too busy?  What happens if you don’t take time to decompress?
  • For the littles: What is your favorite prayer

PRAY: O Lord, even when crowds were pressing upon you, you still sought time to pray.  Bring us back to the silence of our hearts, so that we too may be refreshed by your spirit.  Amen.

BLESS: May God bless your new year! Amen.
